Soy and menopause:

Soy used to be considered a health fanatic's food choice. Recently it has become more mainstream.

Because of its growing popularity, it is also being sold in regular grocery stores.

The soybean stands in a class of its own because it contains so many nutrients. It is just amazing how healthful this incredible plant is.

Soy foods have many benefits:

* positive effect on heart disease
* positive effect on reducing menopausal symptoms
* rich source of B vitamins
* potassium
* zinc
* calcium
* soluble fiber
* omega-3 fatty acids
* a complete source of protein
* rich source of phytoestrogens

The benefits of soy for menopause is that it helps to balance your female hormones which in turn helps to reduce your menopausal symptoms. Besides that, it has all the benefits that women in midlife require such as additional prevention against osteoporosis and heart disease.

The soybean is actually a legume. It can be found in many food and beverages such as yoghurt, milk, other beverages, cereals, breads and tofu.

Soy is one of the forms of phytoestrogens. Isoflavones which include genistein and daidzein are found in high concentrations in soybeans and soy products. (Isoflavones are also found in lentils, chickpeas, and red clover.)

Dr. Laura Corio recommends getting your phytoestrogens through your food, not from pills or powders. She says the protein in the soy is necessary to activate the isoflavones.

Try to incorporate naturl soy into your diet a few times a week.
