Do I really want to get my skin care advice from a twenty-five-year-old woman? Some commercials lead us to believe that gorgeous women with absolutely fabulous skin use the products they are endorsing. By the way, does anyone consider that these women aren’t actually old yet? And they definitely haven’t reached menopause.

It’s not just the media and men who are doing this. Women are also pooh-poohing the older woman because-and here comes my psychology background-they want to distance themselves from their ultimate fear; they will become just like them. So, they toss out their older sisters like a worn-out shoe.

The natural looking woman over the age of fifty is rarely seen in the fashion and modeling world (although she may be hosting her own talk show). Perhaps the digitally-enhanced or cosmetically-altered might get some attention.

The menopausal woman is still very active, doing what really counts in nurturing future generations, caring for the elderly, making huge strides in her career,leading the next generation of women, speaking up in politics, protecting our planet, being active in our children’s schools and doing volunteer work.

If you had to choose, would you rather be heard or seen? Of course, we ultimately want to be heard and seen, and that's exactly what we should be striving for. This is the wisdom of menopause. But what’s fabulous about this age is that our beauty is not just skin deep.

The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern.
