Are Phytoestrogens Safe?

QUESTION: Are phytoestrogens safe? I've heard some controversy on this subject, and I just don't know now.

RESPONSE:Phytoestrogens are weak, estrogen-like foods that are generally believed to be safe, if you are careful not to overdo it. Balance is the key.

You can get your phytoestrogens from food (which I highly recommend) and tablets and capsules. These pills can be bought without a prescription. The danger in taking pills and capsules is that you might overdo it. Be careful.

Eating phytoestrogen foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and flax seed is part of a healthy diet in general. It is also a heart-healthy diet. It may provide relief from menopausal symptoms as well. It may work on some women's symptoms and not on others. You decide.

Studies involving Japanese women show that they work for menopausal symptoms. (I take this evidence with a grain of salt because there are so many other factors that Japanese women are exposed to as well, such as low bad-fat diet etc)

Studies are still being done on the benefits and risks of long term use of phytoestrogens on bones, breasts, heart, and menopausal symptoms.

To be on the safe side, use it in moderation and try to get it from the food you eat.

Another Question came in:

QUESTION: Should I take phytoestrogen supplements?

RESPONSE: I suggest you save your money and possibly your health by getting your phytoestrogens in the foods you eat.

One of the reasons I don't recommend supplements is because reliability is a problem. Research has shown that two-thirds of supplements have fewer phytoestrogens than is claimed by the manufacturer.

You need to get about 45 mg of phytoestrogens daily. Sometimes this means you only need one serving!

To give you an example:

Tofu has 40 mg in a 1/2 cup serving.
Flaxseeds has 31 mg in 1 tbsp.
Soy milk has between 10 and 25 mg in a 1 cup serving.
Green tea has 3 mg in a 1 cup serving.

That shouldn't be too hard!Sprinkling flaxseed into your smoothie is probably the easiest way to get what you need.

To be safe, you should speak with a Naturopath to get the full scoop on the dose of phytoestrogens for you.
