Menopause Medication: Know your personal risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy .

Every woman is unique, her signs and symptoms of menopause are unique and so are her tolerance levels. Besides all that, your own predisposition for certain health risks is different than another’s. Whether or not your friend or neighbor is taking hormone therapy shouldn’t affect if you want to take it too. You need to get to know your own personal risks and benefits.

• What is the severity and frequency of your symptoms?
• Do your symptoms greatly interfere with your work, pleasure, or relationships?
• Have you kept a journal of your symptoms and identified any triggers that you could eliminate?
• Do you exercise regularly, and what is your fitness level ?
• Do you take the time out to relax and meditate ?
• Do you take time out to do activities you enjoy?
• Are you able to laugh several times a day, and if not, are you actively seeking out people or events that make you laugh?
• Are you aware that any hormone therapy carries risks, some of them researched and documented some that still have to be studied? Some of these risks are life-threatening?
• What is best route of hormone administration for you, should you choose to take it? Pills? Patches? Topical creams? vaginal rings ?
• Any medication you take orally will have to pass through the liver. Is your liver in good shape?
• If you smoke , are you willing to stop?
• Are you eating a healthy diet for menopause ?
• Are you doing what you can-despite any symptoms you have- to get a good night’s sleep. Did you read my article on how to get a good night’s sleep if your suffer from insomnia ?
• Do you realize that hormones, and any menopause medication, should be taken in the lowest dose that works for you? If you choose to take HT, your doctor will have to follow you closely and monitor your symptoms.
