Book Review#2: The Wisdom of Menopause by Dr. Christiane Northrup, M.D.
The Wisdom of Menopause by Dr. Christiane Northrup, M.D.
This is also one of my favorite books to go to for sound menopausal advice. It’s a positive book about how to deal with the midlife change in a healthy way, physically, emotionally and spiritually. She talks about personal empowerment that comes with menopause.
After I read this book I actually felt excited about the second half of my life. This is truly a time when you can focus on yourself a little more, advance your career, reap the benefits of the child-rearing you have so painstakingly put your energy into etc.
Dr. Northrup talks about her own divorce which was partially initiated by what her hormones were telling her at midlife. She needed to end her marriage in order to thrive through the second half of her life.
While I don’t recommend making drastic changes when you are in the throws of the hormonal fluxes of menopause, she does have a point. Our bodies have their own intrinsic wisdom that we ought to (cautiously) listen to. Please read my article
menopause and moodiness.
for a further discussion on this topic.
Dr. Northrup goes into more medical detail than other books on menopause. If you are interested in this kind of medical detail, then this book is for you.
Dr. Northrup mostly recommends natural remedies, lifestyle changes, diet, positive thinking, relaxation and exercise.
She states that if a woman is to receive hormones of any kind, then they should be given in the lowest dosage possible for the right reasons to the right patients for the shortest amount of time.
Dr. Christiane Northrup has written more books since then and you can have a look at the advertisement at the bottom of the page for more book suggestions from this knowledgeable and wise doctor.
I hope to eventually get to all her books to write reviews on them all.
